A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
“What they see is what they’ll be”
Alton Trahan, President

Welcome to the website of 100 Black Men Of Greater Lafayette, Inc.

We were established in 2008, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, as an affiliate chapter of the 100 Black Men of America. Our mission is to improve the quality of life, enhance educational and economic opportunities for African Americans, particularly youth residing in the Greater Lafayette area. As an affiliate chapter, our core areas of work are known as the “Four for the Future” programs: Mentoring, Education, Economic Empowerment, and Health and Wellness.

“What they see is what they’ll be” is not just a motto of the 100 Black Men network of chapters, it’s a lifestyle of motivation to being positive role models in the community. We embrace this responsibility and inspire our mentees to emulate the core principles of our organization.

Mentoring through a lifetime is essential to developing our mentees to become productive citizens in our community and future leaders. Since 2008, we have mentored hundreds of youths at several schools, stood vanguard for educational issues concerning students less likely to be heard, provided financial literacy education, and host community-wide health initiatives. The 100 BMOGL believes in forming partnerships with other organizations and business to enhance the quality of life in our community.

The 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette became the chartering organization for Cub Scout “Pack 100” to revitalize scouting for under-served youth in north Lafayette. We have partnered, annually, with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in hosting a “Kuts for Kids and Stuff a Back Pack” event with the support of COX Communications wherein thousands of children have been provided free haircuts and school supplies.  Through our partnership with Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, we have hosted Heath Fairs annually. We expanded our collaboration to include State Representative Vincent Pierre and S.M.I.L.E. Community Acton Agency. In 2014, we began hosting a Fathers of the Year Awards Banquet in collaboration with Scouting and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The event has recognized over 200 fathers that have been nominated as a Father of the Year.

In 2021, we co-sponsored Project Choices, a youth leadership initiative with Lafayette 15 th JDC Specialty Court, with lifestyle coach, Earl Leblanc. Team Adventure Games. Expanding mentoring to young females has always been part of our ongoing effort. A mentoring and financial literacy program for middle school girls will commence fall of 2022.

This is a challenging time, but yet an exciting time as we continue the work of the 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette, Inc. We steadfastly believe in and value services that personify our national motto “What They See is What They’ll Be.”  We are “Real Men, giving Real Time”.  I hope that as you read and/or listen about the work of the 100 that you will be inspired to join us as a member, volunteer, or a donor.  We welcome collaborations with other organizations in an effort to provide resources to our communities and make a positive impact on future generations.

Again we thank you for taking the time to visit 100 Black Men of Greater Lafayette, Inc. website.  We thank you for your support as we strive to inspire and positively impact the lives of the youth in our communities.

Kind Regards,

Alton Trahan, President
